I Ain’t Sugar-Coating Nothing Today

I have been told many times that I can be harsh, and I need to tone down my sarcasm. Well my response to that is “I don’t work at Dunkin Donuts, so I ain’t sugar coating anything”, or I will repeat one of my dad’s sayings “Use your head for something besides a hat rack”. Usually it’s my response when someone asks something for a zillion times or says something that makes absolutely no logical realistic sense. I used to ask my mother “do you want me to give you an HONEST answer or a NICE answer…cuz they won’t be the same”. So because some people can’t handle my comments in public forum diet groups online I decided to post them on my own page here.

Sooo if you are on any diet (and it doesn’t matter which one) the diet rules and guidelines say “eat foods #1,#2,#3 and don’t eat foods #4,#5,#6”. I really don’t wanna hear that you have no idea on what to eat, because if you had read the rules before you announced that you were on the diet than you would already know what to eat. Yeah you get bored with foods #1,#2 and #3 or you are addicted to food #4 and wake up in the middle of the night craving it. Well then eat the damn thing but then don’t tell me that you are following the diet because you ain’t.

And if giving in to your cravings makes you gain weight, don’t come whining to me saying that you have no idea why you gained. Some people can’t handle any diet without a scheduled cheat day. They need a yummy treat to look forward to. Well if any diet is any good, then why would you cheat yourself of its rewards…lost weight, better health, smaller clothes?

I stopped buying bags of sugar many years ago. I don’t even know what sugar costs in the store, where I work. I have a container of honey that I bought in January when I was sick, I thought I would use it in my tea, but nope I never opened it. Now if you raise bees and collect fresh honey from your own beehives then I would say you got real honey. That stuff I bought is just man-made crap. I grew up in New England, where people will tap trees every year to make their own maple syrup. While it’s all sugar, it’s also REAL. Not like the watered-down crap full of mystery ingredients that you find in alot of stores.

Most diets tell you to cut down/ limit processed crap…usually it means, stop stuffing your face with sugar, bad carbs and things full of man-made chemicals. Basically learn to eat real food. How can you live without some items that come packaged in a Box? Well, the same way your great-great grandparents did.

But, you claim that real food is bland and boring. So what? Get used to it! Your taste buds will survive. Quite a few members of my family are diabetic and during one of my pregnancies my doctor was worried about me developing the disease. Doctors usually tell people with diabetes to limit sugar or use some fake alternative. Have you ever done a Internet search for “Sweet & Low” or “Equal” or “Splenda” or any of the other mysterious artificial sweeteners? OMG, that stuff can be worse than sugar.

Something from that list above can be found in most packaged food. I have noticed that the above list missed a few sweeteners, Oh well hopefully you get the idea.

I have worked in nursing homes, some restaurants and now I work in a general store. Sometimes it amazes me what some people call a meal. I can’t understand when I see huge obese people load up plates or shopping carts with what I call junk and then they feel the need to top it off with a super sized diet soda. I just can’t wrap my brain cells around it, to understand why they are eating like that. As if a giant diet soda will make all their other crap alright. Hey, I might be a weirdo for slicing up lemons to put into my water bottle and then adding a couple cap-fulls of apple cider vinegar. But I will take my weird drink any day over any diet soda. I have never liked the taste of diet sodas, on the rare times that I tried them years ago and they made my stomach hurt for hours.

At this time, I am following quite a few diet groups on facebook and even more diet groups on Sparkpeople. I now have about 3 dozen books downloaded onto my tablet about those diets. I’m not sure how to really classify my eating. I usually just tell people that I am picky, without explaining any diet.

Like most people, there are sugary food items that I like the taste of: ice cream, junior mints, mentos, and reese’s pieces. But I can’t even say half the ingredients in those and if you looked up all the side effects of each ingredient then you would see how toxic they really are. So if you are wondering what’s my go-to snack item now….well its, Pork Rinds with Guacamole. Yes, I went from sugar to salt & fat. The plain pork rinds have NO sugar/NO carbs…but lots of salt. My last roommate used to complain about my pork rinds alot.

Why does food have to contain artificial anything…artificial colors, artificial flavorings, and artificial sugars? What ever happened to eating real food? I haven’t done enough research to figure out why or when our groceries started looking like they came from a science class instead of a home economic class.

As Dad used to say: “You are what you eat. You eat junk, you become junk.”

Shopping For My Cold

I am staying in a Super 8 motel, within walking distance to the Super Walmart in Flagstaff, for a few days. I decided that I needed to get a few items to try and get rid of my Winter Crud. I can’t remember the last time I had such a cold before now, but I know that I don’t want to have another one after this is gone.

I got 3 different teas…all with ginger in them. If I don’t like them maybe my roommate will. My roommate went to the clinic in the national park and was diagnosed with bronchitis. There are 7 women living in the house and I think 4 of us are sick. Great time for the heater to break at home.

This motel is right next to a cracker Barrel, and some Outback Steakhouse is down passed that, but I don’t have anymore energy to go back out. I don’t usually eat processed soup, but while I am sick and staying in a motel the soup will be good enough.

I already had Halls cough drops and Ibuprofen so I didn’t buy anymore..I should of bought lemons but I didn’t want to carry anything else. Besides my store in Tusayan sells lemons so I can just get them there. We just don’t have a big selection of health/first aid stuff. Hopefully my roommate doesn’t mind the smell of the VaporRub. My mom used it for me and my brothers alot when we were little and I love the smell. But my roommate has a sensitive nose and doesn’t like strong smells.

I tried out my new thermometer and it seems that I don’t have a fever.. 98°. So I just need to get rid of my headache, runny nose, phlegm and nagging cough. I probably should have gotten more Mucinex. Seeing as I told my boss that I would see a doctor while I was in Flagstaff, I will probably stop in the ER at the hospital tomorrow just so I can get an official “sick note” for work.

I went to the dentist

I started having trouble with my teeth in early 2002. It was mostly back teeth so I wasn’t  all that concerned with it. I was still working in a hospital then so I think I had dental insurance and did go to a dentist for a cleaning and x-rays, but never got any work done.

Then in 2007, I broke a tooth on the left side, while chewing gum.  I figured that it must of been some pretty tough gum. Then about 2009, I broke a tooth on the right side while eating a Hershey kiss. I must of broken some more teeth (but forget how) because when I went home to see family in December 2011, my kids were in shock. One of my son’s asked me what happened and said it looked like it hurt. I probably could have been the new face ( or mouth) for the poster child in some meth head commercial.

While working in the Grand Canyon National Park I was able to get dental insurance again.  So in 2014, after many abscessed teeth which made my face swell up a few times I finally got a bunch of teeth pulled.  The insurance ran out before I could finish all the dental work. Facebook even had a memory today from April 2014 with pictures of my face swelled up from an abscess. I won’t have to worry about those anymore.

I got all my top teeth out yesterday.

My face is puffy and even my nose felt numb. My x-rays are behind me. After giving me shots to numb my face, I just had to wait about an hour…so of course I took pictures. The actual  extraction took about 10 minutes, 15 minutes at most.

This is the after picture. After I went to Walmart to get pain pills and baby wipes. My lips and chin were a complete mess with caked on blood. 1 lady in the store gave me a hug because  I looked like I was in so much pain. I didn’t feel much of anything, but I looked like I got attacked by Freddie Kruger in some horror movie.

Now my family asked years ago, but at the time I had no idea. How do teeth get so soooo bad. Well it turns out that teeth need saliva to stay healthy. So if you are on any type of medicine that gives you a dry mouth (feels like cotton mouth), then that med is bad for your teeth. This includes any over-the-counter cough medicine or sleeping pill.

Well I am finally happy with the way my smile looks. Next I will be happy to learn how to eat yogurt. It was so weird trying to eat some last night. Hey I might of found my new diet. I’m calling it the denture diet. I have stocked up on yogurt & applesauce waiting for this moment.

Good Morning

I am up again earlier then any sane person should be. 3am and I have my coffee and instant oatmeal…I mixed a blueberry &  banana flavored packages together. I also have a banana  that I bought yesterday, after work. I can see the shadows of the palm trees outside blowing in the wind, so I know I will need to dress warmer for work today. This will be day #7, working an 8-day stretch.

Now what does a person do when they wake up 3 hours before they have to leave for work? Well obviously they type out a new blog post, while drinking a couple cups of coffee. I will jump in the shower around 4am, and will linger enough to apply moisturizer because dry skin has been driving me crazy lately. I even remembered to take my vitamins/supplements this morning. Need to make that a priority again because waking up in the middle of the night with leg cramps (Charlie horses) for 20-30 minutes is no fun at all.

The above picture was yesterday’s breakfast during my break at work. When I start work at 6:30, I get a break around 7:45am for breakfast. I love the fact that we can have fruit offered everyday. Sometimes there is cantaloupe but not yesterday. I am just hoping that Yellowstone also offers so much fruit everyday for its  employees.

So yes, I will get 2 breakfasts, the one I ate at 3am & another one about 4.5 hours later. I have been trying to be good and skip the blueberry muffins and french toast.

On my way to getting healthy

Created by Photo Grid
197.4 pounds….which is 1.4 pounds less then what the scale read a week ago.

When I got dressed for work today, I wore pants that required a belt. Now I had not worn my belt for a week so I was pleasantly surprised when I could use the third hole in the belt today. I had been only able to squeeze into the 2nd hole before. So I was happy about the way my day was starting off.

I have been skipping ice cream at lunch every day for the last week. I have also drank a lot less soda at work. I have tried to free myself of some many carbs but those blueberry muffins at breakfast  are to good to pass up completely.

I have just recently started taking a few supplements again. I stopped taking them 6 months ago and figured my body needed them again. I forgot to buy the fish oil & potassium tablets, when I went to Walmart last week, so I will just have to order them online.

I also haven’t had much trouble with heartburn, this week. I really hate getting heartburn…it was just an annoying inconvenience that likes to happen when I tried to lie down and get comfy on my bed. Heartburn does not feel very comfy.

Blood Sugar Drop

I did not eat a real breakfast yesterday before work. I had the usual 2 cups of coffee, and then a vanilla pudding, banana, and a bottle of cran-grape juice. Soon after clocking into work, I was feeling light-headed, dizzy, slightly nauseous and needed to go to the bathroom every half hour, which is a bit excessive for me. I was also having a harder time concentrating on a conversation that I was having with a manager, but somehow faked my way through it.

I usually take my first 15-minute break about 10:15, but yesterday  I took it at 9:45, so I could hurry downstairs to have cereal and a peanut butter & banana sandwich. Peanut butter helps real fast when I feel like this. I was almost feeling back to normal by the time I got back up to the gift shop. Now I have been checked for diabetes  a few times and even though it runs in the family, I have never been diagnosed with it. Years ago  I had even bought my own  glucose monitor and used to check my blood sugar often. But with all my moving around, I left it behind. Few of my relatives have died from diabetic issues and my dad had taken pills for years but for about 8-9 months has had to take insulin shots.

My life has been what you could call unstable for years…moving around so much without the ability to have medical Insurance or even see a regular doctor. Yeah, even with all the talk around about Obamacare I still have no insurance.  The nearest urgent care here is 1/2 hour away in Rapid City but without my car it might as well be hundreds of hours.  If I get the job at Death Valley, the closest medical facilities are in Las Vegas which is 2.5-3 hours away, and would be impossible for me to get to. I lived in Vegas for about 7 months but never saw a doctor. When I am in the right location then I have no money or insurance…so the right location makes no difference. I need location, money/insurance, time, and transportation to get to health stuff to happen all at the same time.

When I had first arrived for work at the Grand Canyon in 2007, I used to grab potatoes…baked, mashed or even the deep fried breakfast potatoes to relieve the strange symptoms. Now I hardly eat potato except when there is potato salad for dinner, or a rare treat of sweet potato fries. Real fresh produce (or healthy UNPROCESSED  food) is a rare thing in national park areas where I work. So I am not sure how a full-blown diabetic can survive long term in these places.

Today is my day off and I already ate crackers with peanut butter with my morning coffee and just zapped some mac & cheese in the microwave for lunch. It’s not a healthy meal, but on my days off from work, I hate waiting around for the shuttle schedule, to get a ride up the hill to the employee dining room (EDR), And most seasonal jobs in parks only have employee meals at a certain schedule, which never fits my needs. At least at the Grand Canyon I could eat whenever I wanted.

Early Morning Workout

As usual I woke up early, so I grabbed my cup of coffee while I checked facebook…my normal routine. But soon afterwards I decided to head out to the gym. I arrived there about 4:35am and was slightly surprised to see so many cars in the parking lot. Guess I ain’t the only early bird around here.

I started out on the treadmill. There were about 10 other people in the room on treadmills & elliptical bikes. They televisions were on so we could watch either the morning news or music videos. I was more interested in watching some guy upstairs doing stretches by himself.

Anyways I was on the treadmill for 15 minutes before I moved over to the rowing machine for 3 minutes. When I returned to the treadmill for another 15 minutes, I was in front of a mirror that allowed me to see the people behind me. To the left was an skinny old guy that made me think of “father time” complete with the long bushy white beard. Next to him was a younger guy that had enough muscles in his arms & chest to make me think his photo could be on some muscle magazine. Well watching that odd twosome was still better then anything on television.

Well after my second round of my 15 minute walk on the treadmill, I went over for another 3 minutes on the rowing machine. When i finshed with my cardio I walked around the gym to check out all the brochures & business cards that advertise different health stuff in Vegas. I even picked up something about isogenix for my roommate,  seeing as I know she likes that.
